Skytypers Repositioning

Skytypers is a genuine American treasure that in the future may receive the national recognition it merits. Skytypers is a third generation aviation-based company owned by the Stinis family. You may have seen their services, they use five ”skytyping” aircraft flying in a straight-line formation at 10,000 feet altitude. On command, an on-board patented computer/software system is activated and a signal is sent to each aircraft to emit a “vapor puff”. The combined “puffs” create characters, which in turn create the “ad” into sky. Sky Billboards™ resemble dot matrix printing.

I created the term: Sky Billboards™ as part of the brand repositioning. The critical change was to have the owners shift their perspective of their company from aviators, which they were very proud of, to a media branding company.

Scope of Work

– The initial Scope of Work included:

  1. Updating the matrix-like Logo Wordmark,
  2. Designing a corporate stationery set, including: Letterhead, Business Envelop, Business Cards, Media Pocket Folder, Thank You Card, Oversize 10 x 14 custom Envelop,
  3. Corporate brochure
As a result of the market research performed for this this phase of this assignment, I suggested that they needed to change the market position to a aviation brand building media company instead of an flight-drive aviation firm. The reasons were:
  1. Skytpers was started by Andy Stinis in 1932 and starting “skytyping” a new brand across the the eastern coast of the U.S. for a then, little known company: Pepsi Cola. The relationship with Pepsi lasted until 1954.Andy Stinis, as a pilot during WW I acquired the skill and talent to create single-stroke-flight patterns.
  2. By 1954, Andy Stinis had acquired a fleet of 15 WW II North American SNJ-2’s originally built in 1940 and 1941
  3.  The planes have since been restored, and six out of the 11 remaining in the world are used by the GEICO-branded Skytypers.

Extended Scope of Work
As the initial Scope of Work was completed, I was engaged to help Skytypers acquire a major account, which led to bringing in a European-based advertising agency with me closing a $80,000, one week engagement for Sky Billboards™ over the Las Vegas skies during a worldwide poker tournament.
